September 29th 2002: Juliette Binoche presents Jet lag at the 50th San Sebastian festival
Juliette
Binoche, Jean Reno and Daniele Thompson have presented Jet lag, as the closing
fim of the 50th San Sebastian international film festival (Spain), on Saturday
28th, September. Here are a few extracts from the press conference that preceded
the screening of the film.
- For many years, you've done very dramatic roles, like in Blue, and in the last 2 years, we've seen you in Chocolat, which is more a comedy, and now in this comedy with reminiscences of the classic American comedies. Is it just random in your career or a personal decision of lowering your dramatic register in the roles that you play in the films ?
Juliette Binoche: Well, the decisions in actors and in actresses respond to the desires of the directors themselves, with whom we are intensely linked. In any case, even though I hadn't done a comedy before, I did feel like wanting to do a comedy, Daniele had the courage of offering it to me and it's been a gift for me, from her and also from heaven.
-
Did Audrey Hepburn inspire you for the role of Rose, for the look or even for
the hairdo ?
Juliette Binoche: No, Audrey Hepburn has not been an inspiration. For me, Rose is more popular, she has a side which is much more popular, she sits on the ground, so to speak, and so on... But it's very interesting that you talk about Audrey Hepburn, I adore her by the way, I've seen all of her films.
Daniele Thompson: ... that was just an accident, Rose reminded me of Audrey Hepburn but it wasn't an inspiration, it was just a result, and I'm glad that that was the case by the way in the film.

September 12th 2002: Juliette Binoche pinches the laugh out of herself
Doing
her best not to mess up scenes in her first comedy, Juliette
Binoche said she pinched herself to stop from laughing
in the new romantic comedy "Jet lag".
She said she learned the trick and other comedic techniques from her French
co-star Jean Reno, who jokingly retorted: "Don't make me cry" at the
Toronto International Film Festival Jet lag press conference. Juliette
couldn't help but laugh to that remark too, saying "because you (Reno) make
me laugh so much, and we had to take several takes.
He (Reno) told me there's just one simple thing you can do, which is to squeeze
yourself so hard that it doesn't show in the film, and you just remain still,
and I had to do that as (I am) a bad actress," she said modestly.
Thompson
said that she had no idea that Juliette Binoche had such a hearty laugh -- a
trademark of her character Rose -- until a friend overheard the actress laughing
in a Parisian restaurant one day. "The
idea that she (Juliette) could laugh so loud (had not entered my mind) at all
and so we met and she did laugh" heartily, Thompson said. "I
think I have a kind of an open laugh," Binoche admitted with a smile. "I
want to be doing something lighter," she said at a cafe at the
Intercontinental Hotel, where she greeted friends and fellow actors attending
the Toronto International Film Festival. "Refusing parts is what I've been
doing the most since January, and that's OK. I just do not see films that I want
to do coming my way. I truly enjoyed this part, it was a lot of fun," added
Juliette, who took make-up classes so she could learn how to paint her flawless
face. Juliette
eventually said that she found many similarities in herself and her character.
September 10th 2002: Juliette Binoche joins the film's director Daniele Thompson for the Jet lag press conference
The
two international stars of Jet lag,
Juliette Binoche and Jean Reno, joined the film's director, Daniele Thompson for
a press conference, at the 27th Toronto international film festival, last Monday.
They finished the film only two weeks ago, and its world premiere happened
Saturday night. Juliette Binoche stated that the dialogue had a true to life,
genuine rhythm that, "we rehearsed together like a musical…we practiced
for a month before shooting." She was thrilled to have the rehearsal
because she is a self-described, "specialist in silences."
The comedy is a departure for both Binoche and Reno. When asked why she would
make such a career change, "I am a joyful person," said Juliette,
"in life I have an open laugh. It's been a gift, and I think that Daniele
took a risk, I took a risk, and Jean in a way, too! But I was waiting for it; I
was very eager to get into that rhythm and share that with people. The joy."
She
played the role of Rose, "a Barbie Doll; an icon of a woman," she said.
She shared the story of buying pumps for the role, rejecting shoe after shoe
stating that she wanted the heel to be higher, higher, higher.
The stars' rapport off screen was a testament to their critically applauded
chemistry on screen. Binoche had praise for Reno, "I learned from
Jean" -- "Don't make me cry!" he interrupted her. The press
conference ended in laughter.
September 9th 2002: Miramax pics up U.S., Australian, New Zealand and South African rights to Studio Canal's Jet Lag
Miramax Films made its presence felt at the Toronto International Film Festival's opening weekend by picking up U.S., Australian, New Zealand and South African rights to Studio Canal's Jet lag. The deal, worth just less than $1 million, was sealed by late Saturday afternoon -- just hours before the studio rolled out the red carpet at Roy Thompson Hall for its 9:30pm gala screening of Jet lag.
Beating out several suitors including Focus Features and Fine Line features, Miramax is said not to have been the highest bidder with its approximately $900,000 offer. But the studio did boast a strong relationship with Juliette Binoche, who worked with it on "Chocolat" and "The English Patient." Both films earned the actress Oscar nominations, and she won for "Patient" in the best supporting actress category, in 1997.
September 8th 2002: Juliette Binoche finds "new life" in comedy
Within
the context of the world premiere of Jet lag,
at the 27th Toronto film festival, Juliette Binoche was interviewed by Bruce
Kirkland, last Saturday, for the Toronto Sun. She told him that the genre of
slapstick and Hollywood-style romantic comedy is foreign to her, but that she
loves it. "It's so new to me to be in that kind of movie. I feel like a
trailblazer, you know, like a new life's coming up for me. It's the pleasure to
be ridiculous, the feeling to try new things, not knowing whether they're good
or bad -- and it doesn't matter. And I was kind of frustrated before because I
didn't find any role in the kind of situation before. Now I'm happy."
September 5th 2002: The wolrd premiere of Jet lag in Toronto on September 7th, and the publication of its official website on September 11th

within the framework of the festival on Sunday September 8th, at 12:00 pm,
